Although my education is broad and includes studies of many different elements of humanity, I do have some favorite archaeological subjects. Most of my research has included skeletal remains and I have spent countless hours studying human and nonhuman osteology, kinesiology, and anatomy.
I am very interested in the relationship between dogs and humans in the ancient past. There is much that we do not understand about this most common of domestic house pets. Dogs have been recorded in various burial contexts, used for companionship, food, hunting, protection, herding, and entertainment across nearly all of human history.
I never miss an opportunity to check out a museum, zoo, or aquarium. My interest in zooarchaeology is not limited to dogs, though. Getting a closer look at the remains of something the size of a whale is an amazing educational experience.
Layla is an 8 year old pitbull I adopted from the Humane Society. She was found abused and abandoned, but after a lot of care and training, she has been completely rehabilitated. She occasionally assists with field work by carrying extra gear in her pack along with her own water and lunch. Layla has consistently been an invaluable companion and she loves exploring new places and making new friends. She has not (yet) been trained to detect burials.
